New future for ‘Barend & Van Dorp’

A special day: on 17 September 2009, the Dutch Institute for Sound and Vision makes over 8 years of Barend & Van Dorp (a famous Dutch talk show) online available at And this is only the beginning; during the coming months even more material will be provided. Frits Barend and Henk van Dorp, the two talk show hosts, expressed the wish that the material should not only be conserved properly, but should also be disclosed.

With the extensive search feature the visitors can easily find and watch specific fragments, or retrieve relevant background information. The website is more than a beautiful showroom that prevents the material from disappearing from our audiovisual memory. Whoever wants to reuse the material professionally, can now find and order it easily. Therefore, is a perfect example of how publicly available content does not have to stand in the way of commercial interests.

Images for the Future is not only concerned with preserving and digitizing audiovisual material, but also makes it available and reusable for various target groups. The cultural-historical value of the material is large, but what business model will fit best here?
